What will the 'new normal' plane ride include?
Date : 2020-06-03

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has published health recommendations for the aviation industry, which has been severely damaged by the COVID-19 pandemic, and sought to restart tourism.

An international team of experts established by the ICAO is responsible for drafting these recommendations with the help of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

According to the AFP news agency, the changes proposed by the ICAO are crucial for air travel, especially affected by travel restrictions by countries due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

The recommendations, approved by the ICAO executive committee on June 1, will be viewed as a "guideline" to ensure the safety of passengers and staff on aircraft and at airports around the globe.

According to these guidelines, when arriving at the airport, travelers should present a medical certificate and body temperature test. Passengers should prefer to check-in online before arriving at the airport while airports should think of ways to limit physical contact and the long queues at the security gates.

ICAO also recommends the use of electronic flight tickets as well as technologies that limit physical contact such as eye or face scanning at airports.

Passengers are encouraged to travel as light as possible, so take small hand luggage. Books and magazines should not be kept in the aircraft cabin and should also restrict duty free items.

It is recommended that wearing a mask should be compulsory inside the aircraft and at the airport terminal, passengers should maintain a distance of 1m from each other.

On board the aircraft, passengers should wear a mask, restrict travel on board and do not wait in line outside the toilet to limit the risk of infecting other passengers. Passengers should be directed to a specific toilet, based on their seat on the plane.

Flight attendants need to be equipped with personal protective equipment such as eyeglasses, gloves and medical masks.

ICAO does not support vacancies in aircraft to maintain the necessary physical distance. The aviation industry sees vacant seats as a huge profit threat. However, ICAO requires passengers to be as far away as possible.

ICAO endorses the prepackaging of food for flights and regular disinfection of aircraft.

The drafting team of ICAO's recommendations stated that the above measures are not mandatory but they have been discussed and have received consensus from many experts and international organizations. These measures will facilitate the safe and sustainable return of air travel, according to ICAO.
