The first day

Morning

To travel to Korea, start your Jeonju tour at Maeok Hanok (Hanok are traditional houses, Maeul means village). This is the place with the most hanok in Korea with hundreds of houses and surrounding walls creating dense alleys like a maze. Coming here, you will feel like you are lost in a true old Korea, some hanoks are still private houses, but most of them are now built as motels, restaurants, shops or craft workshops. If you need a light coffee, you can go to any cafe because it is famous for its delicious latte.

The center of Maeul is the Gyeonggijeon temple built in 1410, which houses a portrait of Yi Seong-gye - the founder of Korea's Joseon Dynasty. There are also many small museums, one of them is a traditional wine museum, there is an ancient picture to help you know the process of making local traditional wine. However, the best experience is walking on small, winding alleys.

Afternoon

Hotteok (bánh kếp).

                                                                            Hotteok (pancake).

At Hanok Maeul, it's not uncommon to see people on the street holding snacks. Over the past few years this village has become a street food hub. There are a few places with signature dishes like hotteok (pancakes) at Jeondong Hotteok (at 75 Eunhaeng-ro) or spicy pork burgers at Gilgeoriya (at 124 Gyeonggijeon-gil) and there are plenty. Other dishes like meatballs, mandu (dumplings) or crispy squid that you can easily find in the village. After eating, you can enjoy a few cups of tea at Gyodong Dawan (at 65-5 Eunhaeng-ro) with a quiet, peaceful atmosphere. A special golden tea is only available for the ancient kings.

If you want to look for local handicrafts like hanji - a traditional Korean paper made from strawberry powder, go to the Damiseam handicraft showroom (at 100-7 Hanji-gil, which sells handmade clothes are dyed with natural colors).

Night

For Jeonju, makgeolli (a type of milk made from fermented rice) is a food, not a drink. Jeonju City has no less than 7 "makgeolli towns," which are rows of bars with all versions of makgeolli. These bars have an interesting way of serving you, as you pay for your drink as a large copper makgeolli kettle and you get a free meal. This is really fun when you go in a large group because the more warm makgeolli you get the more food. Visit Yetchon Makgeolli (at 8 Jungsanjungang-ro), famous for Jeonju's best side dishes. Get ready to line up because the bars in Jeonju are always crowded.

In addition, there are many great places in Hanok Maeul such as Seunggwangje, a guest house of the grandson of the last king of the Joseon Dynasty. At Cho Ga Jib at the edge of the village, you can stay in a house with roofs that are over 100 years old. These traditional lodges are not too expensive, but if you want to save more you can go to Carpe Diem, a hostel just outside Hanol Maneul.
